Waiver Days – What are they?
There are many NEW requirements from the Ohio Department of Education. The most important items are NEW STANDARDS. Standards are what students are expected to learn at each grade level. There are new standards in English language arts, math, social studies and science. In the 2014-15 school year, students will take the NEW state tests in grades 3-11 based on the NEW standards. To best prepare for how to teach the new standards, educators must be able to discuss the content, plan instruction, and decide what resources are needed. Below is the schedule highlighting the sessions on the September 21st Waiver Day.

Jolene Reinhart - Spring Hill Café Clear Learning Targets - Overview/review of what formative assessment looks like in the classroom and why it is important. The different kinds of learning targets ~ straight from Stiggins’ CASL book…Knowledge, Reasoning, Performance Skill or Product. Use a KRSP Tool to deconstruct the Standard Statements into the different kinds of learning targets for students (providing clarity to teachers AND students about what is being taught/learned). Review Bloom’s and discuss how it relates to the changes taking place with the revised content standards/assessment practices – focusing on higher levels of thinking and performance
Karen Rumley - HS Library The Common Core Standards set requirements not only for English language arts (ELA) but also for literacy in history/social studies, science, foreign language, FCS, the arts, and technical subjects. Just as students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, so too must the Standards specify the literacy skills and understandings required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines. Literacy standards for grade 612 are predicated on teachers of ELA, history/social studies, science, foreign language, FCS, the arts, and technical subjects using their content area expertise to help students meet the particular challenges of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language in their respective fields. It is important to note that the 6–12 literacy standards in other subjects are not meant to replace content standards in those areas but rather to supplement them.
Third Grade Guarantee & Parent Partners
In Ohio, legislation recently passed requiring all students to be reading on level by the end of third grade. Students not on level in reading, cannot be promoted to fourth grade. Parents of students in kindergarten through third grade, will receive a letter if their child is NOT ON TRACK to be reading on level by the end of third grade. Springfield has a very intense, comprehensive reading and writing curriculum. There are also many levels of intervention available to ensure students are on level by the end of third grade. This year we want to create PARENT PARTNER nights for additional support. On the fall conference nights at Roosevelt and Young, there will be special one hour workshops for parents on ways to help their child with reading and writing. There will be books and other resources available. The workshops are FREE, but in order to plan, parents will need to register in advance. Look for more information to come home in newsletters and special flyers.
