December 2009

Happy and Safe Holidays to each of you from all of us!!
Thank You to everyone for stopping in for a conference, coming to PTG meetings, support of market day, the Thanksgiving food drive and the school store. Without your support we could not do all of the things that we do. You are truly appreciated.
The PTG will be collecting unwrapped toys and clothing starting Tuesday, December 1st until Friday December 4th. The items are given to the Springfield Cares group for needy families in our area.
Thank you for your support of the Thanksgiving Reading Challenge, there will be another event during winter and spring breaks. We are encouraging reading of non-fiction books. We also encourage reading with your child and asking prediction and comprehension questions.
Looking ahead: there are three more 2-hour late starts in 2010. They are on the last Tuesday of the month in January, February and March.
There will be a Young School Yearbook this year. The 28-page book with color pictures includes student pictures from each class and several pages of activity pictures. Orders for the yearbook will be taken in January. We are now collecting pictures for the collage pages. We cut them up so they are not able to return.
Winter is on its way, which means hats, gloves and coats. We will go outside, except the coldest days, all winter. If your child should not go outside, because of illness we need a note from the doctor. We do not have an inside monitor to watch students so they must sit by the office. Please be understanding, that this is the teacher's time to eat lunch.
Our policy for noon recess is:
School closing information will be sent using the parent broadcast but also check local TV and radio stations.
We stay in only when: It is raining, sleeting, snowstorm, wind chill is below zero and/or the temperature is below 10 degrees.May 2009

On behalf of the Young School faculty and staff, I thank each of you for the excellent school year. We again this year have enjoyed helping with the academic growth of all students.
Thank you to the PTG, and its officers who continue to vigorously support the teachers and students.
The yearbook has arrived and it looks great. It is 28 pages of wonderful pictures all in color. Thank you to Mrs. Perkins who did a GREAT job putting it together. We have a few extra available in the office at the cost of $15.00.
There was some questions about a change in schools times for next year. There is not any change of times for next year. Young School will start at 8:50 and end at 3:10, the same as this year.
Hopefully warm weather is here to stay. Remember Springfield’s dress code policy. During the months of May and June shorts of reasonable length (not more than three inches above the knee) and of good appearance (not excessively tight or with holes) may be worn. See thru clothing, brief midriff, spandex or tank tops when worn alone are not permitted. Sandals with a back strap can be worn with socks. Flip-flops or sandals without a back strap cannot be worn. Thank you for making sure the children come to school with the proper clothing.
May is a very busy month with many activities at school. We hope you will have a chance to attend the events in support of your son or daughter.

Thank you for your support of Young School and the many activities that occur during the school year. Your continued support is very important to our success and valued by all .
Next year’s Springfield Schools calendar has been completed and approved by the board of education. Please notice Thanksgiving break will be Thursday, Friday and Monday. There will four days during the year that school will start 2 hours late. The four “delayed start” provide the staff four additional staff development times. The buses will run and school will start two hours later than the time it normally occurs.
Second grade students will be taking the Iowa Skills Tests and the Cognitive Abilities Tests, March 30th to April 3rd. These tests are given in the morning and afternoon, so shorter testing blocks of time can be used.
The state achievement test in third grade is given April 27th and 29th.Hopefully warm weather will soon be here.

Thank You to everyone for a great first semester. We will soon have a system in place to lock the front doors, which are the only ones left open during the school day. A camera is being installed that will give us a view of the door and sidewalk. If we do not see you arrive then there will be a button, which will alert us to check the door. We will be able to "buzz" the door open for you.
Winter is here, but we will go outside, except the coldest days, all winter. Our policy for noon recess is:
We stay in when: It is raining, sleeting, snowstorm, wind chill is below zero and/or the temperature is below 10 degrees.Students with boots are permitted anywhere on the playground, students without can only play on the blacktop and equipment.
School closing information is given on most TV and radio stations and our Parent broadcast phone system.
If your child should not go outside, because of illness, please send a note. With a written request your son or daughter can stay inside during recess, due to illness, for one or two days. If it is for an extended amount of time (all week) we need a note from the doctor. We do not have an inside monitor to watch students so they must sit by the office. Please be understanding, that this is the teacher's time to eat lunch and we do not have an inside monitor.
Winter is also a time for lice, colds and flu. With 345 children in one building we can share these problems but ask you for help. Please check your child's head and let them know the way that lice can be transmitted. We send home a letter every time lice is found to the class that the student is in and to other classes that a brother or sister may attend. Please call or send a note if your child is staying home due to cold or flu, we want them here but not if they are ill.
The Young School Yearbook will have 28 color pages and includes class pictures and activity pictures. Payment of $12.00 with the order form is due by Friday, February 20th with the book here in May. Order forms will be sent home soon.
We are looking forward to working with a new picture company for spring pictures. Hopefully this will eliminate the problems we have had in the past. Spring pictures are February 26th.
