Our Purpose
The purpose of this society shall be to bring together those people interested in history, and especially in the history of Springfield Township, Summit
County, Ohio. Understanding the history of our community is basic to our democratic way of life, gives us a better understanding of our state and
nation, and promotes a better appreciation of our American heritage.
Our Founding
On October 21, 1996, a meeting was held at the Town Hall to discuss the formation of an official historical society for Springfield Township. With the approval of the Springfield Twp. Trustees--Bob Conner, Bruce Killian, and Al Schrader--an organizational meeting was held November 18, 1996 and basic guidelines were adopted for future meetings. On March 17, 1997, officers were elected and a constitution and by-laws were adopted. Although our collection of memorabilia was minimal, it was decided that the items collected would be cataloged and retained at the Town Hall until such time that an area building may be made available for housing the collection.
Our Meetings
Meetings are held every other month (usually the third Monday of the month). We have concentrated in past meetings on "oral interviews" of some of our older township residents. The meetings are taped for our files so that their memories can be preserved for future generations. We have learned much through their visits and look forward to scheduling more interviews.
Our Resources
The Historical Society has been gifted with monetary donations from the Springfield Lake Lions Club and the Springfield township Civic Club. These organizations no longer exist, but shared our vision of preservation of the township's history. We are very grateful for their generosity.
As we continue to collect memorabilia from days gone by, as well as current memorabilia, we are excited about the interest being shown by local residents who share our enthusiasm for the preservation of the township's history. In our ongoing search for historical facts and memorabilia, there are many ways you can help us:
Perhaps you have items form area schools, such as programs, pictures, yearbooks, etc. that could be of value to the buildings and schools committee of the society; or maybe you have a book that we do not have in our collection...you may even be interested in sharing you memories in one of our "oral interviews." It is our hope that you will consider donating items to the society; or if you find you can't part with an item for sentimental reasons, please allow us to photocopy items that might aid in our research.
Your Participation
Most of all, you can help us by joining with us in our efforts. Spread the word to other township residents and attend our meetings when possible. Meetings are always open to public and you suggestions for meetings will be appreciated.
Springfield Township has grown tremendously since it was survey in 1806 by Gen. Simon Perkins. We have rich heritage...history records many community leaders from this area in the 1800's and early 1900's as the township continued to grow and prosper.
For those who have grown up in the area, we have seen many changes during our lifetime. Those changes will be missing from the history books unless we make an effort to preserve our past and our present. It is our hope that we will be able to chronicle the history of our township through pictures, news articles, and other means, thereby ensuring a record for future generations.
