MATH GRADING POLICY

In my math class there are two categories for graded work: Academic Practice and Academic Achievement. Academic Practice will be 30% of the final grade. Academic Achievement will be 70% of the final grade.

Academic Practice is any assignment in class or sent home that has been given to allow the student to practice a concept or skill taught in class. As with any practice, mastery is not always expected during practice. In many cases practice will need to continue for many days or weeks before mastery can be obtained.

Academic Practice is graded in the following way.

If a student completes the practice (assignment) with reasonable effort, he or she will receive an 8 out of 10 for the grade. If the student gets all of the problems correct, his or her grade will change to a 10 out of 10. If mistakes were made, each student will be asked to make corrections. If the corrections are completed accurately, the grade will be changed to a 10 out of 10.

If a student chooses not to complete the work, he or she will not receive points for the practice until it is turned in with reasonable effort. In this case, the maximum grade will be an 8 out of 10.

Academic Achievement includes any quiz, test or common assessment given in class. Whenever a quiz, test or common assessment is planned, a study guide will be handed out to students at lease two days prior to the quiz, test, or common assessment. In math, a study guide might be notes students taken in class, procedures or instructions on particular skills, or extra practice problems to complete. In each case, students will have the correct information, including answers to practice problems to properly study for each quiz, test or common assessment.

Because Academic Achievement is 70% of the student’s grade, it is vitally important that each student study and do well on each quiz, test or common assessment.

*Please note that common assessments count as two test grades.
